Joost Nederlof shares his experience with venomous snakes
We are pleased to share this story from one of our customers:
The hobby started when I was just 6 years old. It was then that I got my first Corn Snake from my parents. That quickly turned into another one, until I had 4. I've bred them when I was 9, and the year after I got them breeding again. That was the moment when I realised I wanted something different.
When I was 10, I bought a Ball Python. Not much later I started to keep a few Boa Constrictors. When I was 14 I started to feel a growing sense of interest for venomous snakes. Although young I started reading a lot, and listening to a lot of experienced keepers.
At the age of 15 I started with a Boiga Nigriceps, as my first experience with venomous snakes. At that same time I got in contact with someone who wanted to teach me more about venomous snakes, and subsequently worked with an adult Naja naja and some other species.
I was way too young to start with venomous snakes, but my passion for them kept growing. When I was 16, I got a Aspidelaps lubricus cowlesi which I took care of under my dad's super vision.
Since then I have kept some more venomous species, and when I was 18 I got the opportunity to work with venomous snakes for my internship for school. This is where I gained my experience.
I have worked with just about everything, from small saw scaled vipers, to big taipans, mamba's and king cobra's. The first time I've worked with Venom Defender Gloves was during that internship. I was only allowed to work with the animals if I would be wearing the gloves. I have pinned a lot of snakes for removing eye caps etc. and the gloves really came in handy.
After I ended my internship I started my own business which I unfortunately only have ran for a year, but despite the short term, I have worked with the gloves almost every time. I prefer them as secondary defence while working and feeding the animals but as well for pinning etc. I continue to use the gloves for various jobs and I'm still impressed by how much they can take.
